In one of the episodes, I think it was 8 or 9, Lina describes the various magical systems employed within the Slayers Realm. Lina herself, mostly uses Black Magic, the forces of destruction, and this is fueled by the emotions of hatred, fear, all the negative emotions. Then there's White Magic, which is only useful for Healing and Defense (I'm actually not 100% sure about this second term, I'll have to watch the episode again). Finally, there's Shamanism, which uses magics directly tied to the Soul and Astral Plane.
So this got me thinking... In popular Wicca tradition, the use of Black Magic is frowned upon, and is seen as evil. Does this mean that Lina is an evil character? Think about it. Lina scavenges treasure from Bandits, she leaves a wake of destruction pretty much wherever she goes, and she seems pretty prideful-- just listen to her rave at the beginning of each episode, proclaiming her victories over the foes who attack her and her associates.
Granted, she is using her power to vanquish monsters and other corrupted individuals, but the fact still remains that she mostly uses Black Magic. What do you think?
