After watching all of Hazbin Hotel, I got to thinking about maybe playing a more non-traditional, naughty character.  What kind of character would you design, and how do you think he/she/they would interact in a group of other not-so-model-citizens?  What setting would be fun to play in?  Obviously, this game would be at least a rating of R, where just anything could happen.

Just think about it, what if your character was immortal (as well as immoral)?  Do you think this would be a fun game to play, where there is no consequence of death?

And, what game system, if any, would provide the best mechanics for something like this?

Senkusha

I've been talking to a few people offsite, and so far of the list of game systems I have available these two were specifically mentioned:

  • Glitter Hearts
  • Fate

I'm wanting to open this topic up for discussion to see what genre ideas and character concepts players might be interested in exploring.

Hm, when it comes to systems I'm rather open since regardless I'm sure I'd be learning a new one. As for genre and for that matters character concepts, I think figuring out a tone people would like have it be?

Senkusha

My favorite genres are Sci-Fi and Magical Girl.  I know that Shadowrun has a lot of interesting Vice types of character qualities, and fits the Sci-Fi realm fairly well.  I have a list of all the games I own stickied in the Role Playing board.

Aeitheris

I think Sci-Fi could work really really well with this concept I'd have to agree. For just how far future the setting could go I personally love super far future but that's just me. I'd love other people's input but generally I prefer more serious games at least for the overarching umbrella of the story and I think making a character that is centered around a 'vice' would be a lot easier if I could delve into the more serious aspects of it without needing to hold back too much or feel out of tone.

Question:  Define serious game.

As for the futuristic tone of the game, I can easily foresee something like beyond Star Trek's timeline, where the traveling the galaxy is like going to the mall.

Aeitheris

By serious I mean a game with genuine stakes, and character's that match that. For example for vices that the game would be somewhat themed around at least character wise, a more serious look into what they are and how they can affect someone compared to a more cartoonish or lighthearted look at them.

Also, the core of a serious game imo comes down to drama. Lighthearted games are usually light on it since it often dampens the mood of a joking/fun atmosphere. Drama brings depth to characters, situations and generally allows more fleshed out and 'real' characters. Hope that makes sense.

Since we're using Hazbin as the inspiration for this idea, the stakes of the extermination I'd say is the drama behind the story, while the tragedy in the cast's backstories is their personal drama. It has light hearted moments and jokes but is generally a serious story.

Senkusha

Okay, yeah, that makes sense.  But I will state that if there's drama, I like a healthy dose of comedy too.  Not to be confused with lightheartedness.

Aeitheris

Of course, a game with only drama and purely serious can get boring or even just plain depressing. Gotta have both to make something compelling a lot of the time imo, plus in a group based story usually those moments are inevitable and a highlight of personal interaction between party members.

Senkusha

The comedic tension is mostly why I love role playing. :)

Aeitheris

Makes sense, but yeah I suppose it really comes down to what the other potential players would be interested ideas. I have a few loose ideas but it heavily matters on the setting.

It's been a couple of days, and out of the six or seven people that said they're interested in playing a game like this, so far it's just avatar_Aeitheris @Aeitheris and avatar_Senkusha @Senkusha (myself).  I'm going to give this a few more days (I understand the Superbowl may be a contributing factor).  I'm hoping to have a group of at least six players, but ten is my ultimate goal.

In the meantime, I guess lets begin fleshing out the game concept.  So far we've got a distant future, science fiction setting centered around drama as the primary genre.  I would expect to see significant development in backstories with lots of tragedy laced throughout it.  I'm not demanding a novel, however, something more than a few paragraphs, that would allow a player to examine the vice(s) that afflict your character(s).

While Hazbin Hotel is an inspiration to this game, I not quite ready to run around within the world of Hazbin Hotel.  I could see that Earth could be a center-world, a world with authority within the Human species, however, perhaps the meat of the game could be played on an outlaying world, a colony maybe?

Also, since we're using a Vice as a core character concept, I really don't mind if multiple characters share similar vices. (Just for clarification).

Senkusha

I made a game space for the game!  I still haven't decided on the game system, but when we get more players discussing the game, we'll all come to a decision.

The setting is in the far future:  I'm thinking like 4000 or something.  We have the capability to visit any place within the known galaxy (its a BIG place) with or without the use of large transport ships.  Think teleportation.  I'm not restricting any species.  If you can dream it and wanna play it, go for it!

This game is NOT safe for work.  It's rated R.  While it is an adult natured game, I'm not looking to reading about explicit sexuality.  And we don't need a laundry list of gore while committing a murder.  You can have a lusty character, just don't go overtly sexual with it, please. Use innuendo, summary All of these characters have morality issues.  Think of the seven deadly sins.  Have fun being an uncouth juvenile delinquent, if you choose.

Finally, the characters will look like anime characters, and we'll have access to all the available tropes that you'd find in a typical anime
