That Side Opportunity

I'm working on my first real full length novel, title to be determined, and while I'm working through the first draft and the skeleton outline, I've discovered something about my plot.

I have three primary characters.  One main protagonist, her best friend, and the boy she wants to date whom she (the main character) has a crush on.  I'm telling this story in the first person perspective of the main character.  She's head over heels "in love" with the boy, who she only knows because he's trying to date her best friend, however, her best friend isn't interested in him.

That got me to thinking.  Sometimes in life we have our eyes set on some target, some want, and we're so focused on that target that we totally ignore some other opportunity that's right next to us.  I discovered that I'm going to be illustrating this point from a unique angle, AS that side opportunity.  

This should be interesting to explore because I feel that by working on this sub-plot, I'll be able to identify these Side Opportunities more easily and accept them into my life.  Most of the time, we are preoccupied with trying our hardest to get that target, what we want.  However, through this story exercise, I'll be looking at the opportunity from the side instead.  I believe that this will make me a better person.

What a unique way to look at it! How does viewing from the side differ from third person?

I think that viewing at a situation through the eyes of another character allows you to feel the situation from that non-first person perspective.  A third person perspective, in my opinion, feels a few levels removed, or maybe less intimate?

I had to think on this one as I'm not used to the "side" view. Because to me, it was just the Third Person. But... it could also mean, for me anyways, indirectly. Example. The sun. We have direct sunlight but also indirect sunlight. Direct to me is Third Person. Indirect is the Side View. You won't get all the info so have to fill in the gaps.
Or am I reading too much into it? lol
