It's been YEARS since I've last futzed with SMF, the software that powers this forum. Back in the 1.x days of the software, changes were farily straight forward. After all, that's how I learned the bulk of the PHP and MySQL that I know today, was by hacking this software and making my own bastardized Mods. I was getting pretty good, creating an official RPG mod for the software before a major bout of depression stole my inspiration and motivation.

Then SMF 2.x came out, and many changes were made. The code was streamlined, and much more efficient, The developers standardized much of the code and created their own customized function, which had to be learned. And at the time, I didn't have the energy to devote toward learning any of it.

Today, I took a stab at making a tiny modification that I needed, but saw there were no developed solutions for. I wanted to add a Calendar modification, that would allow me to separate events such as normal holidays from anime character's birthdays. And while the task isn't 100% completed, I was able to add a new table to the database for the different event types (this allows for future expansion), but also, I was able to modify the code using the defined custom functions the developers used that power the SMF software! I have confirmed that my data is being stored correctly in the database.

My final step is to figure out how to separate the Holidays on the Board Index (the main screen that displays all the different Boards of topics) from the single line inclusion under Holidays, and to separate that data into the two different event types that I currently have defined.

And to think that it only took my about three hours of studying the code, figuring out where everything is defined to make these small changes that I needed. I'm feeling more confident about re-adding PHP to my resume again.
