I'm kind of excited about seeing the latest and greatest coming out from the authors of this forum software we're using. But I have to admit, that it feels bittersweet. I know most of the changes are going to be under the hood. The developers are moving away from the Procedural Functions of PHP to the more modern Object Oriented Programming model that is pretty much standard in every application since like the early 2000's. I'm saddened, because looking at that style of code, I'm easily lost, and therefore will be unable to really code anything I'm dreaming of.

I've tried to learn object oriented programming many times, in many different languages, but I just can't seem to wrap my head around how it flows. Maybe I'm just too much of a linear thinker.

Bonus, maybe they could implement some of Chat GPT 4's new coding algorithms so we don't have to wait ten years for the next version to become available?
:P

I am looking forward to seeing what new eye-candy features they may have up their sleeves. I know nothing has been made towards what the users will feel and see yet, but I'm still excited to see what could potentially become available.

What do you think about a new major software release (those of us who participate here). What kinds of features would you like to see? I guess another way I could ask this question is, what do you feel SMF is currently missing? Especially those of us who use other forum software at other sites?

Why did you pick SMF over other platforms? I'm always curious
:)

My forum in on Proboards because my first forum many years ago was on there. It's free & while it has went downhill now, it still does have ease of use for beginners.

I chose SMF because it was the natural upgrade path based on what I started with way back in 2003. Back then, one of the free message boards was YABB (Yet Another Bulletin Board). That became YABBse (Yet Another Bulletin Board, Splinter Edition (or SQL edition)). Then it became SMF (Simple Machines Forum).

SMF has always been free and has an amazing support community with lots of modules and plug-ins. And crafting your own modules is fairly easy. Of course, now with 3.0 using Object Oriented Programming structure, I may not be able to make any modifications. We'll see.

Thank you! It's always nice how people get started
:)

How would that affect the making of modifications?

I wonder when SMF 3.0 will come out? I use SMF for Gex Forums currently and I would love to see a version 3 someday, it's my favorite free forum software.

I was excited for SMF 3.0 until I learned that there would be no new features being added. Just all under-the-hood code redesign. I guess that's okay, as it needs to be done anyway-- I'm learning from developing extensions for XenForo that OOP programming is vastly superior to Procedural programming, like what current SMF uses.
