I've had this anime sitting on my hard drive for probably a year now, mostly because I read somewhere that this anime isn't "that good". I forget the exact reason, maybe because it was gory, or dark, but whatever the reason I read, I have to say that while it is a bit on the darker side, it's a pretty good magical girl series.
This series does have its moments of gore. Yes, there is some blood. And torture. There's also a bit of fan service too. But so far, (I've watched up to episode six), this show focuses on the emotional impact of trauma, loss, and dedication to a cause.
