I'm really not sure what I'm looking for here. So, I'll list some of the things that I like from various games, and see if there's a game that checks most of these boxes...
  • In Shadow Run, there are a ton of Qualities. These are like Feats, Talents, Special Abilities, Defects, Flaws, etc, that help to shape the role play of your character. I want a system with a shit-ton of these options.
  • I hate Dice Pool mechanics. I want something simple that I can quickly add up to tell me if I pass or fail.
  • I want a character sheet that isn't overly complicated (Anima, I'm looking at you with your four pages of WTF is this for??), but I want something that's complete enough that it's not too vague (a problem with the overly simplified character sheets from the Big Eyes Small Mouth line).
  • The game can handle high technology as well as fantasy stuff like magic. I love a good Science Fiction world-- probably one reason why I love Shadow Run so much, however, with that being said, Shadow Run suffers when it comes to melee combat. The game is built for gun fights-- so how does one resolve: You brought a knife to a gun fight situation?
  • I want a game system that I can run effortlessly via Play by Post. (Which is why I'm looking for a simple randomization mechanic, see above.)
  • I love to build my characters in any way I see fit. Simplicity is key. I love the way I can build pretty much any character in BESM, While I enjoy the possibilities that the HERO system gives me, it feels too overwhelming. Granted, if I was learning HERO with a group, maybe the process wouldn't be quite so intimidating. So a system that uses a Point Build is a good start.
  • Oh, and Roll Under mechanics. This, I feel is essential for something asynchronous, like Play by Post. Players need to have the autonomy to know if their character pass/failed without a bunch of interpretation. Or perhaps a very loose mechanic like Freeform Universal, with it's Yes, No, Yeah But... type of randomization. Maybe the two of these mechanics could be combined?
Now that I think I've described what I'm looking for, is there anything else that you think I may have missed? I could see this being a perfect game system for asynchronous play. I want something simple that's not overly complicated, but yet full of optional content to consider. Is that a contradiction?

Maybe I'll just need to sit down and create my own system? But that sounds like a ton of work that I'm personally not ready for yet. I mean, I barely have enough energy to do my afternoon chores right now! Anyway, what do you think? Got any suggestions?
