So, I've gotten a taste of Discord recently, and I'm debating to run a Discord sister to AnimeRPGs.com, in hopes of gaining some membership here. I'm not sure if I want to go this route because we're having such a hard time recruiting new members here. So my question to you is, do you think it's a good idea to start a Discord Server too?

Benefits: Discord is more popular than forums. Chat is more real-time, I guess. There are chat bots available to have fun with. May be more familiar with the Millennial crowd?
Cons: Traffic on Discord would take away what little traffic is here. Messages may be less permanent than here on the forum. No search function and limited organization of topics.

What do you think?

I know of people who have Discord but I am for forums rather than chatting in real time. You could maybe put up a poll for it & see what people think.

I don't have any problems with going through a Discord server to engage in forum discussion based on Discord. I'm already in a few of them which isn't bad but I don't think that you can run both of them at the same time and still maintain the right balance. One will always pull more weight over the other.

I would honestly keep a forum and run a discord channel along side the forum, however; discussions shouldn't be moved over from the forum.

I made a discord channel for my forum a while back, but I haven't done anything with it. Forums are opened to the entire web, where, a discord channel is basically locked down from the open web.

This is a good point...
... Forums are opened to the entire web, where, a discord channel is basically locked down from the open web.

The web is open and decentralized. To interact within the Discord community, you need to have a Discord account. And if you accidentally break their Terms of Service, you could find yourself locked out of more than only one Server, but the entire community. This usually isn't much of a problem, but with the increasing use of Corporate AI to moderate, it is becoming more prevalent.

Nod ...It's worth noting that Discord has a predatory convenience model. Meaning that activity tends to move from the forum to the Discord, rather than the other way around.

I'm personally not a fan of Discord, I prefer other alternatives such as Root but the memberbase isn't as large as Discord's is... yet. There's a good number of people switching to other alternatives too, Fluxer is another one that you can self host so many people prefer it to Discord and Root.

I've been thinking about alternatives myself. The AI verification scam is a step too far for me. I can't really ask people to do that to join my servers in good conscience. TToTT
