Yep, they announced the name for their console. Go ahead, make your jokes, it's still worth it for the old games.

Thir announcement and explanation is as follows:

"Introducing ... Wii. As in "we." While the code-name "Revolution" expressed our direction, Wii represents the answer. Wii will break down that wall that separates video game players from everybody else. Wii will put people more in touch with their games ... and each other. But you're probably asking: What does the name mean?"

"Wii sounds like 'we,' which emphasizes this console is for everyone. Wii can easily be remembered by people around the world, no matter what language they speak. No confusion. No need to abbreviate. Just Wii."

"Wii has a distinctive "ii" spelling that symbolizes both the unique controllers and the image of people gathering to play. And Wii, as a name and a console, brings something revolutionary to the world of video games that sets it apart from the crowd."

"So that's Wii. But now Nintendo needs you. Because, it's really not about you or me. It's about Wii. And together, Wii will change everything."

I noticed that to. But because they are japenese i don't think they would have neccassarily picked up on the joke that most of the world would have.

But Wii is actually more revolutionary than any of the others, who cares if the graphics don'[t run at 3.16 teraflops? Only testosterone pumped kids like that. Just look on the cnet hit list to see how adults (not children) are taking the wii.

And it isnt the nintendo wii, its the wii.

want to see the gameplay and game list. Archery with two controllers, perhaps? One being the bow, the other drawing the arrows? Gah, there's so many possibilities...

The PS 3 and 360 have so few innovations its actually embarrassing, all the technology that is included within, and the software that is written and thus the specific features are all just ports of other ideas. And then that only leaves them with the on-chip innovation in terms of speed which first of all gives them a profit-loss and finally wasn't even designed by them. The market is saturated at 12% of the population, those people are teenagers mostly, they refuse to realize that they need an image that appeals to all in order to get better sales. People think that nintendo has a kiddy image, it doesn't people assume that just because it has worse graphics and Halo wasn't released on it that this is so. But the kiddy. immature thing is the graphics, no intelligent person or true-gamer would judge on graphics because the most recent market successes are, We love kutamuri and Brain Age and neither are good at graphics, they are intelligent games. The market is currently saturated with a low-market share at teens. There are far more people out there to convince and if nintendo creates the proper strategy they will reap rewards. And if they release a free dev-kit for unix, linux, windows and mac systems FOR FREE and allow anyone to download and pay (or for free) games made by anyone from their service then all the innovative games and fun will occur on the wii. As devs are tired of paying 1million$ per level and spending too much time on designing a lamp-post for ever increasing attention to detail wants by gamers, and then due to this, the games are riddled with bugs. NO xBox 360 game does NOT have significant bugs in terms of graphics, the detail is so huge they would need 2 years to properly test the game. Its mad. Whereas with the wii, if nintendo sees this, any die-hard kids with a good idea can create the next BIG sensation.

Heck, look at the success of Runescape: those graphics are god-awful, yet the game has millions of players.

Yes well Nintendo isn't stupid they understand that games are about gameplay not graphics (even though they are a part of it

Looking on Wikipedia (I love that site) I saw that theyhad a list of what Wii means in different languages.

English: Euphemism for urine
Japanese: Good
French: Yes
German: How
Korean: Top

So the problem is with English, not the name.

I've started to wonder why people are so obsessed with the potty humor aspects of "Wii" when they seem to ignore it with "we"... I really can't help but think it'll blow over pretty quick.

yes well some of the more constructive jokes made about the wii were actually funny.

But really think about it-

"I got a wii yesterday" (Sounds like 'I gotta wee yesterday')

or "What did you get for [Insert special occasion here]"

"My mum bought me some socks, me sister some shoes and my dad a wii"

just buy an xbox 360, there is so little difference between them, the graphics arnt even that much superior, sony just pre-rendered most of their 'awesome' footage, and fiddelled with their numbers.
