Yesterday, I got my first taste of Vibe Coding. I wanted to do something, that I thought would be a a quick implementation, maybe half-an-hour of work, because all I wanted was a simple progress bar. How hard could that be, right? I mean, there's this:
HTML:
<label for="something">Progress of Something:</label>
<progress id="something" max="100" value="35">35%</progress>

So this should be easy! I just need to understand how XenForo handles HTML....

It took over 12 hours to complete, most of that time going around in a circle, because apparently my theme strips some things out, partially because the damn button was there but the font-awesome wasn't appearing, and because I decided to make it fancy with a dialog input form and pretty rainbow colors.

Let's talk about what happened, and why Vibe Coding is nothing more than yet another Dopamine hit.

I didn't necessarily learn how to properly write code for XenForo. Something that should have taken maybe an hour of preemptive research, wasted several hours of my time-- had I done the research first. The AI discovered that it was looking at obsolete information, which explained why the code wasn't working in the first place. I should have learned about CSS, HTML formatting, Javascript, and Object Oriented Programming using PHP. I should have learned about the development coding standards for XenForo. Instead, I was instructed to do this and do that.

But ya know? I got a really sweet gizmo, that I'll probably use like twice... probably.

The next point I want to touch on is the fact that the AI was using obsolete information to build the code. That's dangerous in any context. Luckily, I wasn't doing anything where lives could be lost. But because I don't fully understand why the code works (yet), I wasn't able to immediately recognize that I was using outdated variables and functions.

But not all that time yesterday was wasted. I learned some powerful debugging techniques and tools. I'm slightly more literate in terms of understanding JavaScript, PHP, and XenForo. I learned the extreme basics for constructing an Addon too, which may come in handy... someday.

Vibe Coding is a skill now, that many people use in their profession(s). But just think about all the trouble I went through yesterday for something simple. Now imagine that your a customer paying money for something complex. The person developing it may not understand what's actually happening behind the scenes. And that means delayed bug fixes at the very least.

What do you think about Vibe Coding? Have you used it? What was the result? As for me, I don't think I'll continue with Vibe Coding. I'd rather understand what I'm doing, rather than being led around by the nose.

I haven't vibe coded yet, but I've thought about trying it out to help aide me with my Sonic disassemblies. I'm okay with people using AI to help them with projects, and if they know what they're doing well enough to help step in when the AI messes things up. Though when someone uses AI to code something for them from scratch without knowing any programming skills is when I get a bit worried about their projects. There's someone recently who used AI to partially port Sonic Mania to the Sega 32x, then switched over to the Sega Master System which is a 8 bit console btw and weaker system. This person clearly had little to no knowledge of how Mania works, let alone how the 32x or Master System works so I don't trust that the projects will ever be finished.
